Japanese in Latin America: Perspectives on Diaspora, Hybridity & the Missio Dei

Dr. Gary Fujino will be giving a presentation at the Hybridity, Diaspora, and Missio Dei: Exploring New Horizons Consultation sponsored by the Global Disaspora Network of the Lausanne Movement in Manila, Philippines in June of 2018. The presentation will discuss the missional implications of the Japanese migration to Brazil which begin in 1908. Today it is estimated that the number of Brazilians of Japanese descent exceeds 1.6 million. Despite their Japanese appearance, Brazilians in Japan are culturally Brazilians who usually only speak Portuguese but are treated as foreigners. Others have returned to Japan where their influence in Japan is growing. Tokyo has the largest carnival parade outside of Brazil. Portuguese is the third most frequently spoken foreign language in Japan, after Chinese and Korean. Japan has two newspapers in the Portuguese language as well as radio and television stations.

Dr. Gary Fujino serves as Professor of Diaspora Studies, Asian Diaspora Specialist in the Department of Diaspora Studies in The Missional College at Missional University. His academic credentials include a BFA in Theatre, University of Utah (USA); Graduate Certificate in Biblical Studies, Multnomah School of the Bible (USA); Th.M. in World Missions, Dallas Theological Seminary (USA); and a PhD in Intercultural Studies, Trinity Evangelical Divinity (USA).
